Reception

The hotel reception is the heart of the multitude of buildings that make up the Califa. This edifice is 18th. Century with three separate staircases lead off into various parts of the hotel. A collection of glass and brass Lebanese lamps illuminate an ancient Druze dowry inlaid with mother of pearl and silver filigre.

El Jardín del Califa restaurant

The Jardín del Califa is one of the main gastronomic destinations in the province of Cadiz, with its palm trees, ancient stone and hanging garden. This is also where breakfast is served. Enjoy a table in the morning sun, in our glass-walled dining room or outdoors under the stars.

Sala Bóveda

Home to one of our favourite pieces, a 19th. Century Persian tapestry in almost perfect condition, this room joins up the reception to the principal building that dates from 1527.

Galería de Luces

Admire the craftsmanship of Moroccan brasswork in the many specially commissioned pieces that illuminate the main entrance off the Plaza de España. The huge antique Susani from Uzbekistan is a special part of the Califa art collection.

Patio Jazmín

This small courtyard would have been the stables for the principal house; we have preserved the ancient stone floor and some of the woodwork. Art here features an original Dogon door and some traditional plant filled urns.

Massage cave

Feeling tense? Need a massage? Our massage cave dug deep into the stone of Vejer is the perfect place to unwind. We also offer massages at our Hammam a short walk from the hotel.

Sala del Califa

The Califa’s room (named for the photo, original work by photographer Tim Booth) is another place to relax or pick up a book. Note the beautiful floor tiles, original to this 19th century house.

Sala Nogal

This museistic space dates from the 10th. Century with its low barrel vaulted ceiling and ancient stonework. A small cabinet holds curios found in the hotel or from travels in the Middle East. The engravings on the wall show various depictions of Vejer contemporary with the main 16th. Century building.

Sala de Mapas

Relax in the Map Room, a space for reading or learning a bit more about Andalucía, it’s mountains, lakes and nature reserves. Borrow a book or leaf through the library of reference works in the room.

Callejón de las flores

The cobblestone ‘Callejon’ is the artery that joins our twelve buildings together, a shortcut between spaces (although you can also get everywhere from within the buildings too). Our gardener Isabel works hard to keep the flowers in bloom all year.

Hotel terrace

Enjoy our south facing sun terrace with plenty of seating for exclusive use of our hotel guests. With views across the town, open countryside and distant ‘sierras’ this is a perfect place to relax, read a book or enjoy a glass of wine in the evening.

Sala Gacela

Adjacent to the main reception is the Sala Gacela, named after the ‘Nasrid Gazelle’ (Esther Cardell) the first artwork we commissioned for the Califa inspired by a famous ceramic in the Alhambra Palaces of Granada.

Patio de las Adelfas

Rooms 1 to 4 surround this charming stone flagged courtyard with its abundance of climbers and an exuberant Kentia palm. The patio leads on to the Callejon de las Flores and is a useful shortcut to the Jardín del Califa or to the terrace of the roof bar, the ‘Teteria’.

La Tetería del Califa's rooftop

Relax on the Tetería’s luminous terrace with views across the forests of Montenmedio, the marshes of the Barbate river, and the distant Alcornocales Sierras.
